A Christmas Miracle!

Our momma hen is back to laying eggs. In the cat's house. On the front porch. But we have eggs again, so that's all that matters.
And here's a duck egg from Pip thrown in for good measure.
It was a bad feeling to be buying eggs from the store for holiday baking.
There's simply no comparison between the bland store bought and the dark colored, flavorful home grown eggs.
God bless you, poultry, every one!

Laura's Famous Quiche

Laura's farm job is caring for laying hens.

She bought 16 Golden Comet pullets in September, and they've all survived and thrived to become excellent egg producers.
They earn her enough cash from egg sales to cover the price of their feed, and she also has a dozen eggs a day or more at her disposal.

Here's one of the many dinner quiches we've enjoyed so far, absolutely delicious with Penny's cream, vegetables, cheese, and some ham.

Our neighbor to whom she gave a piece even put a picture of it on facebook.
Laura's on her way to becoming a famous chef.

Milk and Eggs

Lots of milk.
Lots of eggs.

Quiche, bread pudding, and French toast are on the menu!

Gray Day Hodgepodge

Katie took the camera outside to get some farm pics.

JoJo obliged her for a portrait of a silly pony.

Laura's hens are laying now. Here is a photo by Laura of today's egg collection.

The calf and Tom are best friends.
Tom sleeps curled up on him at night in his hay stall on our front porch, but I can't photograph the adorableness of that because if I move or turn on a light, they jump up and run toward me.
I do have a nice collection of flash lit gray and tan blurs snuffling my lens.

I like Tom Kitten. He climbs trees and eats rodents. He also sleeps cutely on his own pillow next to Becky's head at night. Better yet, he sometimes clumsily falls into the crack between her bed and her wall. His meow for help is surprisingly quiet and feminine for such a hulking, manly kitten.

Incredible, Edible, and Overflowing

It's a good thing that we read this article today: http://yourlife.usatoday.com/fitness-food/diet-nutrition/story/2011/02/Eggs-better-than-cracked-up-to-be-USDA-says/43475540/1 from USA Today. It's about how eggs aren't bad for you.
Phew!
This is what Katie came up with tonight. 36 eggs. Granted, she didn't collect yesterday, but still...
Quiche, anyone?

Never Mind

I grabbed my trusty Yoplait container and fortunately a wash bucket for udders, and headed down to the barn right after the sun peeped out and the wind stopped making a spooky howling sound through my back door.
I hadn't milked goats for a really long time, which was evidenced by the way I squirted some on my jeans and up my arm.
The last goat we milked was Tillie, and Becky did all the milking with her.
Tuscany and Merope are historically my best milkers, but for some reason when Danny took their kids to wean them last night, I didn't expect much milk today.
I was wrong!
They gave over a quart between them, which isn't bad for Nigerians.
I also checked the coop and brought up seven more eggs.
So never mind all the whining about farming's no fun.
